If you've got command line access to your server, you can get the latest version of WordPress and unzip it all from the CLI.

wget http://wordpress.org/latest.tar.gz

This will download the current version of WordPress

tar -xzvf latest.tar.gz

This will unzip the file into a wordpress directory.

I recommend moving all the files from inside the wordpress directory out to the root of the web server directory so that your urls don't look like 'mydomain.com/wordpress/'

Do do that change directory into the wordpress directory

cd wordpress

Move everything (*) up one level (..)

mv * ..

Move back to the root directory

cd ..

Then cleanup the empty wordpress folder and the downloaded zip file

rm -R wordpress rm latest.tar.qz

Even better!
