Should I know how to use wordpress as a developer?

I'm in the process of learning web development and I just found out about wordpress. If you know what wordpress is, is this something I should know if I'm looking to become a developer? Or is wordpress more for those who want to make their own website without a developer? I just want to know this so if I need to learn it, I can add it to my agenda down the road. Thanks for the advice!

Wordpress lets you make a website without having to build a project from scratch. Since you know HTML/CSS, I think Wordpress will be a good step to take next.

Also, if you just want to make a quick little website like a bio or a chatroom, it's much easier to do in WordPress because the quantity of Themes and Plugins are increasing. You'll learn much more about WordPress when you start this WordPress track!

Also, like what John Larson said, It'll be difficult to get a job as a WordPress developer, although it is to me personally a good step to take.

Treehouse's description of this Track:

Learn WordPress, which is one of the quickest and most popular ways to build a dynamic website. Since its debut in 2003, WordPress has become so popular that nearly 75-million websites all around the world are powered by it, which makes up almost 20% of the internet! Also, because it’s an open-source platform, it has millions of themes and plugins available for anyone to use β€” most of which are completely free and easily customizable for your website.

Hope this give you an idea of what amazing things WordPress can do! ~Alex

Hey, I don't have a definitive answer..but I can give you my impression. It don't think that you would get a job at some high end company as a word press developer. But I do get the impression that if want to make a website with a lot of functionality it would be a good option. When I look at a word press site they are very clean looking. For some reason however they seem to tend toward the one page scrolling through forever kind of thing. But it seems like it's a way to get connected to the back end kind of stuff. Databases, form submission, emails... that kind of stuff. So my impression is if you were to go to a small business and say "I can make a site for you with online ordering and a scheduling appointment book", Wordpress can do that with plugins or whatever. So that's just my impression. Maybe someone that actually knows can set me straight.

Thank you both for the answers. It really helps clear things up. Sounds like it may be something that I would want to learn and have on my resume! Thanks again! Mike

Michael, One other thing I would add. Wordpress is based on/built with PHP. I kinda flunked out of PHP. But if I were to go back to PHP, it would be through Wordpress.
