Should I install XAMPP or Desktop Server?

I'm on a PC and am just diving into learning how to develop locally. Should I be using XAMPP or Desktop Server? I want things to be as painless as possible and I don't want to run into any trouble down the line. Some people recommend XAMPP and others recommend Desktop Server.

As a newbie, I feel kind of lost and could use some guidance here because I feel like I only have one shot at this.

It's also difficult because there are two courses on local development in Treehouse and it they really don't compare the two.

@zac gordon

Thanks, all.

Its a matter of personal Preference. As for me I've been using xampp since 2009 and havnt had any issues yet. Setup on windows is a breeze, although I prefer to do all my software programming on mint linux where updating an application is as simple as sudo apt-get update xammp.
