How do I load the single.php content of a portfolio post into a modal window instead of a new page?

I.e I have 4 portfolio posts with featured images that contain a 'badge icon'. I would like these posts to open a modal window so that the page behind the window is still the portfolio page. I do not want the user to leave that page to view the content of the post. How would I go about loading the post's content into a modal window?
