Bummer! Didn't get the right values from `first_and_last_4`. Code works in my console...help!

This code works in my console and meets the requirements of the exercise, but Treehouse returns the error in the title. What am I missing?

'''Python def first_and_last_4(li): first = li[:4:1] last = li[-1:-5:-1] new = first + last return new '''

slices.py
def first_4(li):
    new = li[0:4]
    return new

def first_and_last_4(li):
    first = li[:4:1]
    last  = li[-1:-5:-1]
    new   = [first + last]
    return new

I found that this solution works in my IDE:

def first_and_last_4(L):
    return L[:4] + L[-4:]

Well that is definitely cleaner code. Works too. Thanks!
