Python Python Basics Functions and Looping Raise an Exception

Won't raise error?

It just does not want to be raised. I've tried every combination and it is not working.

suggestinator.py 
def suggest(product_idea):
    return product_idea + "inator"
if len(variable) < 3: 
    raise ValueError

The variable is "product_idea". You want to check if the string is shorter than 3 in the function, and if it is throw an exception.
