wondering why Task 1 is no longer passing when It went through the first time...

var id = "23188xtr";

var lastName = "Smith";

var userName = id.toUpperCase();

userName += "#" +=lastName.toUpperCase();

any ideas why this isn't working?

Your mistake is from your last line of code. You can't have this userName += "#" +=lastName.toUpperCase();

var id = "23188xtr";
var lastName = "Smith";
var userName = id.toUpperCase();
userName += "#" +=lastName.toUpperCase();  // you can't have this like this. This here is an a

You want something like this

var id = "23188xtr";
var lastName = "Smith";
userName +=  id.toUpperCase() + "#" + lastName.toUpperCase(). // you want  both id and lastName to have the UpperCase() method and hash in the middle in order to get what the challenge is asking for.
