Why is the 'red' a boolean?

Why is the second red a boolean in this code?

menu.findItem(R.id.red).setChecked(red);

I got it. I missed the part in the code where we set all those variables:

boolean color = true;
boolean red = true;
boolean green = true;
boolean blue = true;

I thought for some reason that red was related to the red in R.id.red
