Why does it think v is a list object?

Am I overcomplicating this?

disemvowel.py 
def disemvowel(word):
    vowels = ['a', 'e', 'i', 'o', 'u']
    word = list(word)
    for v in vowels:
        while (v in word.lower()):
            print v
            try:
                word.remove(v.upper())
            except ValueError:
                pass

            try:
                word.remove(v.lower())
            except ValueError:
                pass

    return "".join(word)

def remove_word(word, letter)
    word = list(word)
    try:
        word.remove(letter)
    except ValueError:
        pass

    return word

Here is better way of your code

def disemvowel(word): vowels = ['a','e','i','o','u', 'A','E','I','O','U']

ret_word = []
for i in word :
    if i not in vowels:
        ret_word.append(i)


return ''.join(ret_word)
