Why do I have to complete the url with /resume.html? Why can't I have a direct preview of resume.html

I thought I could see the preview directly from the resume.html file, just like when working with index.html. Why do I need to type in the url?

If you don't give a file name, the server is configured to look for a default file and provide that to the browser. The default file name is typically "index.html".

But if you want any other file, you have to fully specify the file name with the URL.
