It really depends on your platform and what hosting software you are using. If you are using xampp/mamp then:
For Windows: C:\xampp\htdocs
For Mac: /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/
If you are using something else it may be elsewhere - have a look here first though.

1,293 PointsThanks I found it. Now when you are using shared hosting and working on a real site do you download these files to edit them, or just do it right in the dashboard editor?

14,429 PointsI tend to download and edit so the live site is not affected by my changes in case anything goes wrong. That being said if it is a minor edit you can SCP or FTP to the site - edit the file and off you go.
