what's wrong with request.open('GET', 'sidebar.html');

the variable is called request and I need to open a AJAX request. It says that I need to specify the method which is 'get'

app.js
var request = new XMLHttpRequest();
request.onreadystatechange = function () {
  if (request.readyState === 4) {
    document.getElementById("footer").innerHTML = request.responseText;
  }
  request.open('GET', 'footer.html');
};
index.html
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
  <meta charset="utf-8">
  <title>AJAX with JavaScript</title>
  <script src="app.js"></script>
</head>
<body>
  <div id="main">
    <h1>AJAX!</h1>
  </div>
  <div id="footer"></div>
</body>
</html>

Your code line is fine, but it needs to be located after the function definition instead of inside it.
