am i taking this query in a wrong way

Just leave it as targeting your class intro. In a later section of the challenge it wants a new rule targeting the span inside of intro so at the end of the challenge you'll end up with 3 separate rules. One for the intro paragraph, one for the span inside, and another for the links.

.intro span {
  font-weight: bold;
  font-style: italic;

Hi Lakshya It seems you were targeting the wrong <span> element I'm afraid, you want the <span> inside the

<p class="intro"> Lake Tahoe is one of the most <span>breathtaking attractions</span> located in California. It's home to a number of ski resorts, summer outdoor recreation, and tourist attractions. Snow and skiing are a significant part of the area's reputation. </p>

So "intro" is the only class name you need to target

.intro { font-size: 1.25em; line-height: 1.6em; }

Then the span within the intro

.intro span { font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; }
