squaring.py
def square(number):
    return (number*number)

result = square(number)
print (result)

If you run the code you'll see

NameError: name 'number' is not defined

your function is perfectly fine but to call it you need to actually pass it a number

def square(number):
    return (number*number)

result = square(4)
print (result)
>> out: 16
