What is the difference between a dictionary and NSDictionary?

A question I should have asked before, but what is the difference between a dictionary and NSDictionary? Why apple has two classes for dictionaries?

I Googled it and came up with various answers - here's some links!:

There's some differences in the way the contents are passed around, either by value or by reference; see here.

Swift documentation has mention of the Dictionary type being bridged to NSDictionary; see here.
