What is Lightbox used for?

What is the purpose of using lightbox? I didn't download it. Just asking in case someone can tell me before I download.

It's a photo preview mechanism.

Typically, a lightbox is used when you have several visible images to give the user a way to get a closer look at one of them. I believe the one here works by putting up an overlay with a larger version of a clicked image and dimming the rest of the page. Then when the user clicks again, the overlay is removed and the page reverts to the original appearance.

that's cool....
