what is front and back end web design/development ?

I not sure what they mean could someone tell me plaese thanks

Frontend is what runs in the browser...html, CSS, Javascript..." client-side" Backend is what the server runs and consists of (usually) a server, application, and database...SQL, PHP and so on..." server side"

The public will see the front end of the site and the backend is what the site communicates with. So if you write a blog post the content and style is the frontend and where/how it's stored and recalled is the backend.
