What are the advantages to linking fonts through CSS vs. HTML?

I have always used HTML to link my fonts, but was wondering if there are different advantages to linking through CSS?

Autumn Sellers, from a performance standpoint, it is almost always better to use <link rel=’stylesheet’ type=’text/css’ href=’style1.css’> instead of @import to load Fonts. This is especially true if you're using a CDN, such as Google Fonts, to load the font. You just have to be sure to link the font before linking any stylesheets that depend on that font.
