What are meta tags?

In the quiz, one of the questions is about meta tags, and if they have a closing tag. Can someone quickly explain what are meta tags?

Hi Robert Gatt ,

meta tags are just informations/instructions that you give to your page in order to be used by browsers to execute certain requests. for example how to display content, providing keywords that later can be searched via the web etc.
