What animation technique should/can I use for this?

Hello all, I'm really hoping someone can help me, because I can't seem to find what I'm looking for on the internet. I'm currently using illustrator and I want to animate my drawings - simple animations, no huge movements (e.g., moving head left to right to follow the cursor as it goes from one button to the other on hover).

The problem is that my drawings use brush strokes and too many paths have been created for it to even be saved. Now, I can rasterize the brush strokes, but then it's no longer compatible CSS animation techniques. So I was thinking about creating a GIF and just activate a particular gif for each button.

However, I'm not sure if the GIF will be streamless... Any help or tips would be GREATLY appreciated. I'm starting to think this isn't possible without great difficult. So I'm thinking I'm going to have to do it like this website http://tympanus.net/codrops/2016/03/21/animated-animals-css-svg/

I have not! Thanks for suggestion those! They definitely look promising, but I can't tell if they would be able to do what I'm looking for. I'm looking to animate an oil brush texture cartoon (think about the painting scene in What Dreams May Come - if you know the movie).

I'll definitely look into these deep though! Thanks!
