Using "Text Editor" in Linux Min

I am trying to use Text Editor for writing html, but it is not working the way notepad does in a windows environment.

If I just type into the Text Editor, and view in the browser the lines show up. If I type in the html code, from HTML Deep Dive, nothing shows up

Any suggestions. I am new to Linux
