This is not working. I have to put <input type = "text" id = "name" name = "user_name" twice as once will not work

Try removing the spaces between your attribute declarations. For example:form action="index.html" method="post">"

You forgot to close the form tag before you started your first input. What you wanted was this:

<form action="index.html" method="post">
  <input type="text" id="name" name="user_name">
</form>

Note the > added to complete the tag.
