The preview shows that my code works, but when I click "check work" it gives me an error...

Sometimes the challenges (and error checker) is very specific. While your code is correct in syntax, I think the error checker is having a problem with "background-color" and with "screen." 

@media (max-width: 1020px) {
  .main-header {
    background: tomato;
    color: #fff;
  }
}

This code will pass the first challenge for you. Jason :)
