The direction doesn't make any sense.

I know how the code should be but the direction of what to do seems like it's saying to do the wrong thing. I don't get it.

index.html
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
  <head>
    <meta charset="utf-8">
    <title>Nick Pettit</title>
  </head>
  <body>
    <header>
       <nav>
          <ul></ul>
      <a href="index.html">
       </nav>

        <h1>Nick Pettit</h1>
        <h2>Designer</h2>
      </a>
    </header>
    <section></section>
    <footer>
      <p>&copy; 2013 Nick Pettit.</p>
    </footer>
  </body>
</html>

Hi,

You've got it close, but where you have the link for index.html should be wrapped around the text which resides inside a list item. You'll have a nav element with an unordered list inside, which will contain three list items, and the links will surround their text.

<nav>
   <ul>
     <li><a href="index.html">Portfolio</a></li>
     <li><a href="about.html">About</a></li>
     <li><a href="contact.html">Contact</a></li>
   </ul>
 </nav>
