The code seems to be correct but it won't let me pass. Why?

Complete the assignment to the userName variable by adding a # symbol followed by an all uppercase version of the lastName variable. In other words, using string concatenation so that the final value of userName is "23188XTR#SMITH".

alert executes the right answer.

app.js
var id = "23188xtr";
var lastName = "Smith";

var userName = id.toUpperCase();
lastName = lastName.toUpperCase();
userName += "#";
alert(userName+lastName);

It's asking you to assign the whole new string to userName, so:

var userName = id.toUpperCase() + "#" + lastName.toUpperCase();

try something like this

userName += "#" + lastName.toUpperCase();
