Simple explanation of FTP and making changes to an existing website

Hi, I am struggling to understand FTP and when you use it. I made a Wordpress site locally using Desktop Server and pushed it live, hosted by Hostgator. After it went live I realised that I didn't update the favicon. My question is... do I update the favicon on the local dev site and then re-upload all the files as I did before using FTP? Or do I just upload a new favicon image file using FTP and ensure it has the same filename?

You can just FTP the files that have been added/changed since the last ftp, and it should work - it'll certainly save you some time.
