Your close.
Firstly, always declare variables before you use them to prevent any unwanted errors. Secondly, set the value to true as the disabled attribute is a boolean attribute.
Although, in most browsers, $submit.attr('disabled', 'disabled');
will still work, its consider best practice to set it to true as the attribute accepts a boolean value
const $submit = $('.submit-btn');
$submit.attr('disabled', true);
