Could you use return this.characterName? Or is this just redundant? What is best practice?

1) You could return this.characterName 2) It is redundant 3) Best practice is to keep it consistent. If you are using this in a situation where it is redundant then you should always use it. Commonly, it is preferred that we leave out redundant syntax.
