Question about self and the init method

Why is self used with the helper method in the initialization if we are not supposed to use self in an init method?

1 Answer

You can use self in an init method, you just have to make the init call to super first (and check that you got back a valid instance). e.g.

if (self = [super init]) {

/*safe to reference self here*/

}

return self;
