It's been a while since 6502 & even z80 Assembly language, I was a teenager, but what would I have to pay you to say "care" for the data type CHAR? ...as in character "care-act-uhr" phonetically. Is it common for school instruction in a live classroom to really say char as in char-broiled? haha - I know it's silly, just makes me whence!

1,536 PointsMike02 I am going to give you a BEST answer mark if no one else chimes in! It is care or kair (rhymes with hair) because it is short for character. We used to PRINT ASC ("A") to get the ASCII value (American Std Code for Information Interchange? I think! -- value 65 for an A) or use CHR$(65) to get a character "A" (32 is space, 66 is B, 67 is C). That meant Character String CHR$. It's not really pertinent to programming... you can pronounce CHAR as "dog" and it will still perform the same. Just pet-peeving!

12,216 PointsNo, I'm pretty sure Mike is right. I've been through many programing classes and none of my instructors have ever pronounced it as "care". Not once. I've heard both "char" and "car" but never "care".

28,770 PointsI've heard it pronounced "char, rhymes with bar" by several professors, and also pronounced "character" because they read the shorthand and just said the word.
Never heard anyone say "care" though.

1,536 PointsWhen they pronounce UTIL as yootull I have a facial tick too! It's you-till as in utility - just commentating, not complaining. He's doing a great job with the course although lists, sets and maps and very foreign to me... but got that coded 1st time thru with Maps. Booyah!! (that is boo-yaw hihihi)

Char car is an acceptable second because it makes me think of The Cars, but I'm still sticking with the char with the sound of a bar. Now, where was I ....the vessel with pestle has the pellet with the poison.........the palace...
