problem with the challenge

on this one i type:

.main-header { background-image: linear-gradient( to top, steelblue , darkslateblue 90%); }

and yet it doesn't pass me? why is this?

You've got the right code, I think the challenge engine just sees the spaces in your answer and doesn't like it, which in real life wouldn't affect your code.

.main-header {
    background-image: linear-gradient(to top, steelblue, darkslateblue 90%);
}

Just put this into your challenge answer and it should work. :-)

It's just being finicky about the spaces. Try getting rid of the space after STEELBLUE.

.main-header { background-image:linear-gradient(to top, steelblue, darkslateblue 90%); }
