passing tuple to method

I am not sure why the following doesn't work. Can you please assist?

dimensions = [ (5, 5), (10, 10), (2.2, 2.3), (100, 100), (8, 70), ]

def area(*a): return a[0] * a[1]

maps.py 
dimensions = [
    (5, 5),
    (10, 10),
    (2.2, 2.3),
    (100, 100),
    (8, 70),
]

def area(*a):
    return a[0] * a[1]

The instructions state that area() needs to take a single argument, a two-member tuple (ie: any one of the items in dimensions) The star symbol...

*

...is a multiplier. You are using it correctly in your return line. Have a look at your area()'s input. I bet you'll figure it out. If not, just let me know and I'll explain further.
