My footer keeps collapsing due to my floated elements in my column layout please help!

It looks like you are trying to modify your footer with .footer which would denote a footer class which is not present though main-footer is. In order to modify the footer element by itself you would remove the period and just have footer. Since your footer already has a class of main-footer I would recommend putting all your features there.
