Well, it depends on what you are referring to client-side or server-side. At some point, JavaScript will become the universal language with the help of React, React Native, Express and Node and other cool libraries and frameworks. Another reason why JavaScript is considered, a go-to language is because es2016 is out. With this, it takes JavaScript from a scripting language to an object oriented one. You can now make actually classes.

I was once told for server-side learn PHP first and then learn node, it can help you appreciate the difference and understand difference between synchronous and asynchronous, but for client-side JavaScript is the way to go for providing interactivity for the site (app).
