can anyone please tell me how to select lists in nav and assign them to navigation links

You have to use query selector and you are looking for the links only so it is 

let navigationLinks = document.querySelectorAll('nav a');

you can select it another way, thanks to Steven Parker (https://teamtreehouse.com/stevenparker). try this,

let navigationLinks = document.getElementsByTagName('nav')[0].getElementsByTagName('a');

Why is "a" the tag in this case, not "li" as has been used in the examples we've been given?

Hello Peter, The task is to select multiple LINK items therefore we are using 'a' tag, not the 'li'. Hope it clears your query.
