There are other minor variants of the loop, such as:

   for(int i = 0; i < programmers.length; i++){
      int adjustedIndex = i+1;
      String programmer = programmers[i];
      System.out.println(adjustedIndex+" "+programmer);
    }

or

    for(int i = 0; i < programmers.length; i++){
      int adjustedIndex = i+1;
      String programmer = programmers[i];
      System.out.println(String.format("%x %s", adjustedIndex, programmer));
    }

In reference to your code, the variable type for programmer should be String rather than String[]. And using printf rather than println would probably require that you provide the line end.
