My understanding of statistical significance is that it reflects internal validity, i.e. the probability that the variables you are testing within your sample have a causal relationship, and not simply a correlative one borne out of chance/unrelated factors. The extent to which findings can be generalised onto the larger population (external validity) is surely a function of sample representativeness, and not statistical significance?
