Is the PUG templating engine essential for understanding Express?

I'm getting the idea, that this is yet another course that is cluttered with excess 'extra information' that takes a lot of focus off the subject at hand. When I see a course for Express Basics I don't expect to be taught another template or framework just as an aside.

Now I have to learn 2 new syntaxes and new functions instead of focussing on what I want to learn: Express... the basics.

On the surface, no you don't need to know Pug in order to understand express. I use express everyday at work and have absolutely no need for pug in my server.
