Is PUG similar to templating in PHP?

For instance in PHP if you want an HTML tag to have some dynamic value that is stored as variable and rendered out to the page you would do something like the following. <h1><?php echo $someVariable;?></h1> Would you use PUG to insert a value in the h1 tag or is PUG more like emmet? I can't really tell why you would use PUG. Does node or express have something built in similar to echo in php?
