Is it possible to make live issues less distracting?

I have a somewhat silly Xcode question that I haven't found any answers to after doing some searching. In Pasan's videos (at least in the beginner track) live issues are underlined in the code instead of showing these big distracting labels that I'm seeing in Xcode 9, is there a setting hidden away somewhere for that?

I'm assuming he's just using an older version of Xcode that handles it differently because the only setting I've found is to enable or disable them entirely.

I definitely want to know when there's a problem but I hate seeing them all over my text editor as I'm making changes.
