IOS Intermediate Development

I am working through IOS Intermediate Development and am starting to work on the app but i feel as if i am missing something. As we connect view controllers to views and construct the architecture of the app i am a little lost with regards to the reasoning behind any of it. Rather i can't visualize the broader architecture of the app and the life cycle of the whole project. Perhaps this is called cocoa touch architecture? Where can i learn or get a better sense of how this whole system works and how a very basic app works?
