Design Illustrator Foundations How to Draw in Illustrator The Pencil Tool

Illustrator removes the last path I have drawn

Hello :)

I am currently using Illustrator CC on OS X and my problem is the following:

Lets say I have just drawn my path and I want to continue the path. I therefor take my Pencil Tool and draws a line from my old path to the desired destination. Instead of just adding the new line, Illustrator creates the new line and removes the last line I have drawn. I have also tried pressing the command key, but it keeps removing the last path I have created.

So lets say I want to connect these two with each other: http://i.imgur.com/iCMD1pB.png

When I draw a line to connect them it removes the last line I have just drawn http://i.imgur.com/CrCnu5M.png

Hi :-)

There are a couple of options.

When there is a little star next to the tool, it's going to edit the selected path it's pointing at.

You can draw close to, but not on top of, the first path.

But more reasonably, you can de de-select the first path ( Push 'command' and click off the path and onto the canvas) before starting the second path (likewise, push 'command' and click on a path you do want to edit it).

You can also change the defaults for the pencil tool. Double click the pencil icon and Pencil Tool Options will come up. To make it so the path you just drew no longer stays selected, un-check 'keep selected'. To make it so you don't edit selected paths un-check 'Edit Selected paths'. Or you can make it so you can get closer to the selected path without editing it, by decreasing the pixels.

Hope this helps!

It helps! Thanks for your help :)
