If there are multiple ways to do same thing, how to decide which one is better?

On what basis do we decide this is better or worse than any other code that does the same thing. Just wondering, thanks!

attempt=input('enter password ')
while count<3:
    if attempt!='opensesame':
        print('please try again')
        attempt=input('enter password ')
if count ==3:
    print('you have exhausted your attempts')

[Mod: added ```python formatting -cf]

You'll often find situations where more than one approach will give the same result. In those cases, additional criteria you might use to decide might be which one is clearer to read (and easier to maintain) and/or which one executes the most efficiently and/or which one yields the most compact code.
