I tried to use an existing .co domain name but the hosting provider does not seem to recognise this?

I don't want to purchase a new domain name as I have 3 existing .co domain names I can use.

Where did you purchase your domain from? And where did you obtain hosting?

In most scenarios, you would obtain these from the same place. However, and this is how I do it, I get my domains from a different place then my hosting. In these cases, we can take 1 of two routes.

Based on the IP Address

If you have access to the servers public IP address, in your registrar ( ie: namecheap, godaddy, etc ) you can modify your A-Records in what is called your 'record set' or 'zone file'

2 Based on Name Servers

Almost all hosting providers will give you name servers for existing domains. In your registrar if you update your nameservers with the ones your hosting provider gives you, your domain will be routed and begin to work. This can take some time depending on the hosting provider / domain registrar combo.

Thanks for your response Justin but it was my fault, I overlooked something although I have to say the sign up page for the host recommended by Treehouse was not great.

I haven't gone through the wordpress series ( nor will I -- I personally thing wordpress is an abomination ), so I'm not sure who they suggest. But there are undoubtedly better services to go through.
