I am not sure if I've chosen the correct class, and if append() is the right selector

You're on the right track. Due to the Treehouse test case, you'll want to assign the new list item to your $newStudent variable. Lastly, append the $newStudent variable to the unordered list with the class of .student-list.
const $newStudent = $('<li>Sam Smith</li>');
$('.student-list').append($newStudent);
