No need to add another if statement inside the previous If statement. You're code should look like so:
var list = document.getElementsByTagName('ul')[0];
list.addEventListener('click', function(e) {
if (e.target.tagName == 'BUTTON') {
e.target.previousElementSibling.className = 'highlight';
}
});
