How to type tilde symbol?

I'm on Mac, Yosemite. Alt+5 doesn't do anything. Thanks!

You should find it above the Tab key.

According to this template the alt code is 126. Simply hold down the ALT key, write the code, and release. http://www.alt-codes.net/

Try Shift + "tilde" key. It's the one above the tab on a Mac.

Hi! I'm dealing now with this issue.

I have a mac running with Yosemite with a Spanish keyboard. Finally it depends on the terminal you are using. If you are using the console treehouse provides you, shortcuts doesn't work (except shift+someletter) so the only option I see is to change the keyboard in System Preferences->Keyboard and input Sources tab, then press plus button and look for U.S keyboard (be sure that "Show input menu in menu bar" is marked down as you can change it easily in the menu bar). Then you can type the tilde symbol with "Shift+(the key located between z and shift)".

Something similar happends on terminal in mac, but with the difference that shortcuts work so if you have, for instance, the "italian typewriter keyboard" just type "alt+n" for tilde symbol.

If I don't explain myself well let me know and I'll try to explain in other way.

Guys this normally works for me like in pages or whatever software, but treehouse console doesn't seem to accept shortcuts.

Any other ideas?

Hello Ani Malkhassian It is not the same for all mac, it depends on what keyboard you have for example (Italian my case - does not have the tilde at all).

And combinations of keys do not work on the console

At least not all of them

My apologies, Since it does seem to be only for the console, did switching keyboard languages not help either?

Yes, using a US keyboard made it work. it is actually the "<" for Italian users.

Still not an ideal solution as it takes too much time but at least it works.

PS for now I have simply added the Tilde to the favorites in the list of characters of my mac in the keyboard settings, still better than nothing.

Its true that not every keyboard key works in the console. I am running windows 7 as a bootcamp partition on my macbook pro. If i want to type a tilde i need to press ALTbig and +. ~ If i try that in the console, it doesn't work.
