I don’t know whether this is of any use but this is what I do.

I choose a random industry (ie recruitment, estate agents, building merchants or any local businesses that might need a website update). I then research how other websites perform, look and feel that are same industry and take what I deem are their β€˜best bits’ of their website and I try to create my idea.

https://www.frontendmentor.io/ is a great place to practice! You can download mobile and desktop mockups, and then you can use CSS and HTML to create them on your own. They have great Newbie mockups too. I love that site!
