Elijah Simmonds I agree with what Annet told you, if your main objective is to build your own models for fun, don't especially spend money into an application such as Maya. Blender is a great free alternative (I've been using it).

Also, if you want to create your own character and export then that one to the unity engine, there are some available ressources for doing it using Blender.

For exemple, check that youtube channel, there are tutorials about that, which are really well explained.
