i was wondering exactly how would i use index

In the example they use the string "Treehouse", however you don't want to input that directly in your function. Your function should take a generic argument. You can name it whatever you want.
To use the index, let's say you have a number called num1, and a string variable called string_var, to pull out the item at the num1 index of your string you'd use square brackets:
>>> string_var[num1]
